International Women’s Day 2014
International Women's Day (IWD), which is on the 8th of March each year, is a global day to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women’s past, present and future. In some parts of the world, IWD is a national holiday. Although many improvements towards women’s equality have been made, IWD is still a reminder that gender inequality remains. In essence women are still not paid equally to their male counterparts, women still are not represented in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and safety are still an ongoing issue.
This year Eva Organization for Women (EOW) is celebrating IWD through close collaborations with different sector experts and bilingual community leaders in Leicester and Leicestershire. We start off firstly, by kicking off a whopping seminar to raise awareness regarding Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) on the 2nd of March. FGM is one of our top agendas, as we at EOW work at a grass root level to support women and young girls who have/are suffering FGM. EOW has and will always be the fore runner for the FGM campaign, aimed to raise awareness of this illegal practice in the aid of the general public and against the communities who practice it, together we can bring this illegal and inhuman practice to an end.
On the 5th of March 2014, EOW representatives will be at the Cort Crescent Community Centre in Braunstone, Leicester, providing help to support women’s aspirations and making ends meet during times of austerity.
We finalise the IWD celebration on the day itself (8th of March) at the Highfields Centre where a diverse range of activities, talks and performances will take place.
- FGM seminar, which EOW is giving, is on Sunday 2nd March 2014 from 6.30-8.30pm at the Secular Hall, 75 Humberstone Gate, LE1 1WB. This event is organised by Leicestershire Fawcett Group and Leicester Secular Society.
- On the 5th March, EOW representative will be at Cort Crescent Community Centre in Braunstone, Leicester, LE3 1QJ from 10 – 1.30pm. This event is organised by Suzanne Elliott, Miranda Glossop and Peter Beardsworth.
- On the 8th March, EOW representatives will be at the Highfields Centre, 96 Melbourne Road, Leicester, LE2 0DS, from 11.30 - 4pm to celebrate the IWD. This event is organised by Big Fish Little Fish in association with the Highfields Centre and Zee Fitness.
All the events are free to the public so come and join us to celebrate IWD. For more information, please visit our website at www.evaorganizationforwomen.org or call us on 07961618589.
