In recognition of International Women’s Day,De Montfort University is pleased to invite you to “Violence against Women. It doesn’t happen here. Does it?” a panel discussion on Thursday 20th March 2014 at the Hugh Aston Building, Magazine Square, De Montfort University, Leicester.

International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900’s and the new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality and emancipation. This year at De Montfort University, we would like to invite you to join us for a panel discussion which will examine the following areas of violence against women from a Leicestershire and Leicester focus:
· some of the data on hate incidents and crimes
· local policy and action plans
· Voluntary sector support
· Honour based violence
· Experiences of lesbian and transgender women

According to the government’s Home Office website (2014), in 2012 around 1.2 million women suffered domestic abuse, over 400,000 women were sexually assaulted, 70,000 women were raped and thousands more were stalked. These crimes are often hidden away behind closed doors, with the victim suffering in silence. Fewer than 1 in 4 people who suffer abuse at the hands of their partner - and only around 1 in 10 women who experience serious sexual assault - report it to the police (Home Office 2014).
The discussion will start at 6pm prompt with tea and coffee being served from 5.30pm. A drinks reception will be served after the discussion in the Hugh Aston Atrium.
